Chevrolets had a new body every two or three years or at the very least a revamp every year with a different grill. The panorama windscreens came and went again when sufficient people had bashed their knees as a result. The cars also bore tail fins but these were more restrained than with other makes and perhaps more attractive as a result. With or without fins, 1958 was an excellent year for Chevrolet. They sold 1,255,935 cars which was 250,000 more than Ford and 29.5 per cent of the total US market.
The Impala was the more expensive version of the BelAir, which was already one of the most expensive cars. The Impala was only available as a coupe or convertible, the latter of which cost $2,841.
