Daimler introduced a sporting version of its DB18 in 1948, the DB18 Sports Special. Despite its enthusiastic name and twin carburettors the DB18 Sports Special proved to be a heavy coachbuilt car, more of a Grand Tourer or gentlemans carriage than a sports car.
Most of these impressive cars featured a drophead coupe body built by Barker. An unusual feature to these Barker Special Sports was the sideways facing rear passenger seat which meant the car was officially a three seater. In addition to the drophead coupe body an alternative "Empress" saloon design, by Hooper, was also available. Production of the DB18 Special Sports continued until 1953.
