Not to be outdone by arch rival, Citroen, Renault launched its own budget-family model in 1962, the Renault 4. With similar but more modern and squarer styling to the Citroen 2CV the Renault 4 offered simple transport for four people and their luggage.
Like the Citroen the 4 featured a push-pull gear-change which was simple to use. The 4 came with a 747cc four cylinder engine, although later models received a larger 845cc unit. Although available with commercial vehicle bodies as well the Renault 4 passenger model was offered only as a simple four door estate. Production continued until 1992.
