Despite strong sales for its six cylinder P4 75 model Rover felt there was a market for a smaller, four cylinder P4 model. In 1953 Rover added a four cylinder P4 to the range and called it the Rover 60. The P4 60 used the same 1997cc petrol engine as the 4x4 Land Rover. Unfortunately the P4 60 unit gave little in extra fuel economy and was not as smooth as the six cylinder engine.
As with the rest of the P4 range the 60 used a separate chassis and a substantial four door saloon body. The interior trim and external brightwork to the same high standards as the other six cylinder cars. In 1959 the Rover 60 was replaced by the improved 80 model which continued to use a modified Land Rover engine.
