Before the war, Renault had built big cars as well as small ones, and when demand increased for more luxury cars, they brought out the Fregate in 1950. This was a spacious six-seater with a conventional front-mounted 2-litre four-cylinder engine that drove the rear wheels. The car was modern mechanically though, with independent suspension of the rear wheels as well as the front. There was a four-speed gearbox. The car's top speed was 81 mph (130 kph) with average fuel consumption of 30 miles per gallon (1 litre to 10 km).
